Flag Half Staff Guidelines

  • The flag, when flown at half-staff, should be first hoisted to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The flag should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.

  • On Memorial Day the flag should be displayed at half-staff until noon only, then raised to the top of the staff.

  • The flag shall be flown at half-staff thirty days from the death of the President or a former President; ten days from the day of death of the Vice President, the Chief Justice or a retired Chief Justice of the United States, or the Speaker of the House of Representatives; from the day of death until interment of an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, a Secretary of an executive or military department, a former Vice President, or the Governor of a State, territory, or possession; and on the day of death and the following day for a Member of Congress.

  • Or as ordered by Presidential Proclamation.

Flags to be Flown Half-Staff Thursday for Serviceman Killed in Iraq

LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today ordered that United States flags throughout the state of Michigan and on Michigan waters be lowered for one day on Thursday, August 3, 2006, in honor of Army Specialist Dennis K. Samson Jr., of Hesperia who died July 24 while on active duty in Iraq.  Flags should return to full-staff on Friday, August 4.

CORZINE ORDERS FLAGS TO FLY AT HALF-STAFF TO HONOR U.S. ARMY STAFF SERGEANT JOSEPH CHIOMENTO II

LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today ordered that United States flags throughout the state of Michigan and on Michigan waters be lowered for one day on Tuesday, August 1, 2006, in honor of Army Staff Sergeant Michael Dickinson II of Battle Creek who died July 17 while on active duty in Iraq.  Flags should return to full-staff on Wednesday, August 2.

Floyd of Grand Rapids who died July 13 from injuries sustained while on active duty in Iraq.  Flags should return to full-staff on Thursday, July 27.
